Sports editorial director Gary Lemke wins another award

HSM is home to a number of award-winning sports journalists. Last week, Gary Lemke and Jon Cardinelli walked away with three of the five awards in the print section of the 2012 SAB Sports Media Awards. Gary won Sports Feature Writer of the Year and the overall SAB Sports Media Award for Print.
Gary is HSM’s sports editorial director and is editor of the acclaimed Business Day Sport Monthly. Among the awards Gary has won include the prestigious SAB Sports Journalist of the Year (print and internet) in 2009, the SAB Sports Feature Writer of the Year (2010), while he was first runner-up in the revamped SAB Sports Media Awards for 2011.
He has held sports and racing editorships on newspapers in South Africa that include The Pretoria News, The Daily News, Sunday Tribune, Cape Argus and Weekend Argus. He has worked in London’s ‘Fleet Street’ on the Independent and Independent on Sunday. He is a published author and wrote swimming legend Penny Heyns’ book with her, as well as a book on South Africa’s great racehorse, Pocket Power.
Gary has a long Olympic history, dating back to South Africa’s first Olympic Games since readmission from international isolation in 1992 and has covered five Olympics, including London 2012, in a journalistic capacity. He has also covered many Wimbledon tennis championships, British Open golf events, Commonwealth Games’, World Championships (swimming and athletics) and world title boxing fights internationally, among others. He has been at HSM since September 2008.
