Finding our roots in the latest issue of Fancourt

29 May 2014 in Lifestyle

Fiona McIntosh explores the newly launched Point of Human Origins Experience at Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point Caves in the Winter issue of Fancourt. Fiona goes on the tour, which takes in an easy walk along a spectacular section of coastline and explores the remains discovered at Pinnacle Point, some dating as far back as 164 000 years ago. The tour is led by one of the two archaeologists who discovered the caves, Dr Peter Nilsen, who explains why this find has completely rewritten the prehistory books.

‘Until 2000, merely 14 years ago, scientists believed modern human behaviour appeared in Europe about 40 000 to 50 000 years ago. But finely made bone points and shell beads that were dated to 75 000 years ago were unearthed in Blombos Cave, along with an artist’s palette last used some 100 000 years ago.’
